John D’Aquino Workshop Series

John D’Aquino brings his 30+ years experience back to Catapult with THREE of his classic youth workshops + ONE MASTERCLASS, each designed to challenge actors in ways he/she hasn’t been challenged before. On Saturday, May 22nd, John teaches Mastering the Disney/Nick Test Scene, Book the Co-Star, and Objectives, Expectations and the Unfolding Moment. On Sunday, May 23rd, John will teach his MASTERCLASS: Comedic and Dramatic Ensemble Play. Full details below.

Mastering The Disney/Nick Test Scene

Ages: 9-17 | Saturday, May 22nd | 9AM-11:30AM

Disney and Nickelodeon have some of their best writers create test scenes that basically throw in “the kitchen sink”! In their own words, they’re looking for actors who can make the turns. Making the turn is when actors  can locate the “funny” and deliver it in a way that is not only funny, but puts their own DNA spin on it.

They’re also looking for “aspirational kids” – kids that other kids would want to emulate. This challenges the actor to show off their skills in identifying the jokes, locating misdirections (the 180) and finding subtle and quirky ways to deliver them.

John has literally worked hundreds of these types of scenes in Los Angeles and around the country. There are essential formulas involved in the structure, and when a gifted actor instills their own DNA into the equation, magic can happen. This course will help actors identify the joke that the writers intended.  Be prepared to have fun and learn how to climb the three-step comedic ladder (triplet),  vocal manipulation, discoveries, dynamic entries and exits and more!

Book the Co-Star

Ages: 10+ | Saturday, May 22nd | 12PM-2:30PM

The old Hollywood adage tells us, “There’s no such thing as a small role!” Every role, every line of dialogue, every syllable is considered essential in a film or television show. Every character must serve the story and move the plot forward toward a dramatic or comedic conclusion. Auditioning for these roles can be tricky because there may not be enough dialogue for most actors to understand how to build their character? This course will give actors the tools and understanding to create the world of their character while telling a full story that follows an arc from the beginning to the end.

Objectives, Expectations and the Unfolding Moment

Ages: 10+ | Saturday, May 22nd | 3PM-5:30PM

If an actor is lucky enough to get a note from casting or a director, they must consider it a gift and know what to do with it! John delivers his top tips for making your auditions more dynamic, helping students raise their game and make the callback list! Students will memorize a scene in advance then tape the first read in class. Then, actors will receive notes and make the necessary changes to the scene. They will then re-tape the scene, and see how many notes they were able to successfully implement. Actors will discover what they are doing well and what they need to improve on for consistent + compelling auditions!

MASTERCLASS: Comedic and Dramatic Ensemble Play

Ages: 10+ | Sunday, May 23rd | 10AM-1PM

Brilliant TV ensembles remain forever ingrained in our memories. Whether it be the cast of STRANGER THINGS, RIVERDALE, FRIENDS, GREY’S ANATOMY, GLEE, GOSSIP GIRL, MODERN FAMILY, OUTER BANKS or NCIS,  the chemistry of the cast is why we tune in! Before a network or studio makes final decisions on lead actors, they hold “chemistry reads” to see which actors have the best potential to make magic happen. This class is designed to cast groups of actors together in exciting comedic or dramatic scenes, allowing them to establish and distinguish their archetypes from one another. The uniquely different cast of characters must learn to work together against impossible odds to bring people together or solve the crime, save the patient or even, save the planet! Actors will work in small groups.

*Prereq: a minimum of two classes taken with John previously required for students to take this course. Saturday sessions of the same weekend will qualify as classes.
